Eagles Blank Charlotte, 2-0, in Strong Season Opening Showing

Charlotte, N.C. --- The Georgia Southern men's soccer team defeated the 49ers of Charlotte by a 2-0 on Thursday evening (August 21st) to start the 2025 campaign.

From the kickoff, it was clear to tell that Southern controlled the first half. Just six minutes in, a shot from Ricky Louis just outside the box grounded left and just hit the side post for the Eagles to just miss on an opportunity. With both defenses settling in, the Eagles finally broke free in the 23rd minute when a long pass from Noah Holmstrøm up the pitch confused the 49ers keeper to try and make a play on the ball. After winning the 50/50, Louis found himself open in the box and passed in an open net opportunity for Southern's first goal of the season.

Only five shots were taken combined in the first half, with Louis' two being the Eagles only ones. Facing a deficit, Charlotte upped the intensity heavily across the final 45 minutes of play. In total, the 49ers tripled their shot total in the first half with nine in the final period, but were unable to connect. Georgia Southern saw few offensive opportunities in the second half, but capitalized on their chances. Finn Steele had possession just outside the box, who then found a cutting Emil Seedorff. The freshman was able to dance around a defender and lay a shot just under the keeper's arm to double the lead for Southern in the 70th minute.

With now a two-goal deficit, Charlotte forced themselves into full-on attack mode. The final ten minutes of the match saw Southern be put on the ropes defensively, but did not break. In a two-minute span, Eagles' keeper Nate Martinez made three saves. This included a diving save on a high shot that the senior barely tipped over the net, securing his clean sheet to start the year. For Martinez, it was his ninth shutout of his career.

In total, the 49ers outshot the Eagles 12-5, but both of Southern's shots on target resulted in goals. Both teams each were called for 14 fouls, with four corner kicks coming from Charlotte. The Eagles, however, did not take a single corner kick on the night. With the win, it would be Georgia Southern's first victory in a season opener since 2021. The Eagles also took down a 49ers team on the road who not only won the AAC and made the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons, but also had not lost a home match since September 9th, 2023 before tonight. For head coach Lee Squires, the victory would be not only his tenth at Georgia Southern, but also his 150th career win.

Next, the Eagles return to Statesboro for their home opener against UNCW this upcoming Sunday, August 24th. Kickoff at Bo Pitts Field against the Seahawks is set for 7 PM.
