Position Previews: The Tight Ends

Chatting with Bryan Schor about his position group

As the dog days of summer roll on, GSEagles.com is sitting down with each of the 11 position coaches to discuss their room. Up next is tight ends coach Bryan Schor.

Q: Coach, what were your overall takeaways from spring ball for your tight ends?
BS: Spring was really productive for us. We had some guys who weren't able to go due to injuries, but that gave others a chance to really step up and grow. JP Mikhael had a strong spring until he was sidelined with the flu. Elija Walton also had a really impressive spring, though he got banged up toward the end. And Ahman Green was definitely one of the highlights—he showed off some new skills that we hadn't seen from him before, especially in areas he didn't get to display earlier in his career. He really embraced the opportunity to expand his role.

Q: What did you learn from veterans like JP and Elija during the spring?
BS: The biggest thing I saw was toughness. Elija is still pretty new to the position—he didn't play tight end in high school—so he's only been learning the position for two years. But you wouldn't know it from the way he attacked spring ball. He wasn't afraid to step up and take on linebackers and defensive ends in key moments. JP battled through an ankle injury for most of the spring. We both knew he wasn't 100%, but he just kept pushing. That told me a lot about his character and his willingness to do whatever it takes for this team.

Q: What excites you about the younger players and new additions in your room?
BS: I'm really excited about this group. River Helms didn't go through spring with us, but he's already shown flashes in summer workouts. He's got experience, understands football at a high level, and always wants to know how he can improve each rep. Ahman is the same way. He brings a lot of football knowledge from his previous stop and picked up our playbook quickly. His grasp of both the run game and passing game has made him a valuable asset, and I think his ceiling is really high.

Q: Who are the leaders in your room heading into fall camp?
BS: JP and Ahman naturally step into that leadership role. They have a presence in the room and set the tone. River leads more by example right now, but he's very intentional about his preparation—whether that's in film, in drills, or just in how he goes about his work. Understanding how to improve is a skill in itself. River gets that. He knows how to study film, how to practice the right way, how to get better every day.

Q: What position battles or storylines are you most looking forward to in preseason camp?
BS: For me, it all starts with toughness. This is my first year with this group, and while we've done player-led practices, spring ball, and summer workouts, fall camp is a different animal. Toughness isn't just about physicality—it's about consistency. Can you show up every single day, on time, locked in, with the right mindset? Fall camp will test that. I'm excited to see who emerges as the toughest guy in our room.

Q: What's the number one thing your tight end group must do to help this team win?
BS: We're going to hang our hat on toughness. That's our group mantra—Toughness. Discipline. United. I tell our guys all the time: we're not going to be the fastest group on the team—that's the receivers and DBs. We're not going to be the strongest—that's the offensive and defensive lines. And we're not going to be the smartest—that's for the quarterbacks. But we can be the toughest.

That's the daily challenge I've set for our group. If we show up every day with that mindset and put in the work, we'll find success. And I really believe that when you embrace that approach, you get the absolute best out of your players.
