Huntington, W.V. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (27-27, 13-15 SBC) were defeated by Marshall (29-24, 14-14) by just a 10-8 margin on Thursday night (May 15th).
All in all, it was a back and forth game between the two high powered offenses. The Eagles would be the aggressors early, as back-to-back hits to start the game from
Josh Tate and
Nico Senese made way for a crucial RBI single from
Jack Myers, followed by a
JP Herrholz sac-fly to make it 2-0 early.Â
However, Marshall would proceed to score eight unanswered runs across twelve hits in the first four innings to quickly make it 8-2 going into the fifth. However, the Eagles would not go down swinging. In the fifth, back-to-back single again from
Luke Odden and Tate gave way for
Sean White to find a hole through the left side and score their first run in four innings. The following inning,
Cade Parker would wake up his team in a big way with a towering two-run homer to left center that would cut the deficit to just 8-5. The Eagles would continue their stretch of consecutive innings scored with
JP Herrholz's single to the left side that scored another run following back-to-back single from the top of the order for a second time in the contest.
In the eighth, Parker would make history. To lead off the inning, he would find his beauty of a pitch on a 3-1 fastball that he essentially mirrored from his previous long ball to tie up the contest late for his Eagles. Not only that, but with now his 13th homer of the year, which now leads the team, he also now has the most homers by a Georgia Southern shortstop with his 21 on his career.Â
However, in the top of the ninth, Southern would run out of steam and allow a two-run blast from the Herd, eventually falling by just two runs after matching their largest comeback of the season at six runs. The bats were scorching hot on the night, though, as the Eagles would go for 14 hits. Tate and Senese would each go for three hits each, with Senese having his best game as an Eagle since the season opener against Western Carolina. Along with Parker's two major hits, Myers would also have his first multi-hit night of his career with his two hits and an RBI. Finally,
Sean Smith would see himself back in the lineup, going 1-4 with a double.
Despite the loss, however, the Eagles do clinch a spot in the 2025 Sun Belt Tournament, as South Alabama's loss to ULM puts them three games back on the Eagles with just two games remaining. Southern still can put themselves in the top six, missing the single elimination round, with a series win against the Herd.
Game two is set for 6 PM tomorrow night (May 16th) at Jack Cook Field.Â
