Maddie Johnson tosses her 11th complete game of the season
STATESBORO – Maddie Johnson was stellar in the circle tossing her 11th complete game of the season as the Georgia Southern softball team slid past Coastal Carolina, 2-1, on Friday evening at Beautiful Eagle Field.
Johnson earned her 12th victory on the year allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings of work. The freshman tallied six strikeouts in the contest and surrendered just two free passes.
Valerie Combs put the Eagles on the board in the first inning on a solo shot to left field to give the Eagles an early, 1-0, lead. Georgia Southern is now 11-1 when scoring in the first inning and 17-5 when scoring first.
Georgia Southern extended its lead in the third when Faith Barth recorded her second hit of the game an RBI single to drive in Emma Davis. Davis reached via a single up the middle and stole second to put a runner in scoring position.
Coastal Carolina looked to cut into the deficit in the fourth frame with a solo home run and extra base hit but the Eagle defense held steady and retired the side. The Eagles held the Chanticleers to 0-3 with runners in scoring position as Coastal left four runners on base.
Faith Barth led the offense with over half of the Eagles' total hits going 3-for-3 with an RBI for her eighth multi-hit performance of the season. Kayla Christensen's reached base streak concludes at 24 straight games.
