Despite Late Rally, Eagles Fall Short to Top-10 Tigers

North Augusta, S.C. --- In front of a nearly sold out crowd of almost 6,000 fans, Georgia Southern (17-11, 5-4 SBC) fell to #6 Clemson (27-5), 10-8, at SRP Park Tuesday evening (April 1st).

A tough start on the mind for the Eagles resulted in two early runs for the Tigers off of five walks in just the top of the first. With the Eagles starter not making it out of the first inning, it gave way for Carter DeGondea to pave the way and have a stellar night against one of the top offenses in the nation. The junior would go 4.1 innings, only giving up four hits and a singular earned run, while also striking out six on the night.

A 3-0 advantage for Clemson in the fourth would be cut down to just one as an eventual bases loaded scenario saw Luke Odden step to the plate. On a 2-2 count, he ripped a grounder back where it came from that skipped the second base bag and made its way into the outfield to plate two. However, Clemson would eventually double their runs in their three-hit sixth inning, making it 6-2. The very next inning though, two walks and a single would load the bases again as Odden would reach on an error, followed by Josh Tate getting hit by a pitch to make it a two-run deficit.

In the eighth, the Tigers would have a massive bases-loaded triple to clear the bags, eventually scoring four and putting the score at 10-4 late. The Eagles would not go down just yet, though. Three straight one-out singles from Sean White, Daniel Haab, and Jonathan Jaime, followed by a walk, would see JP Herrholz take cuts staring down a five-run deficit. Herrholz would rip a single to centerfield, scoring two and electrifying the Eagle fans who made the trip. Although a sac-fly from Odden would plate another, a strikeout would seal their fate, coming up just short to the ACC powerhouse.

On the night, the Eagles would actually outhit the Tigers, 11-8, but four Eagles errors and multiple bases-loaded double plays would come back to them. On the night, four Eagles would have two-hit performances, including Odden, who would have a career high four RBIs on the night.

The Eagles return back to Sun Belt play, with a series at South Alabama this upcoming weekend. First pitch Friday in Mobile is set for 7:30 ET.
