Eagles Fall in Series Opener to Jaguars, 12-6

Mobile, Al. — The Georgia Southern Eagles (17-12, 5-5 SBC) were defeated by the South Alabama Jaguars (13-16, 3-7 SBC) 12-6 on a misty Friday night in Mobile.

It would be the Jaguars to strike first in their first chance at the sticks, as back-to-back doubles followed by a sac-fly scored a pair of Jaguars for an early advantage. The Eagles would respond immediately though, as both Daniel Haab and Jonathan Jaime would reach aboard for eventual back-to-back knocks from JP Herrholz and Luke Odden scored three for the Eagles to take the early lead.

After Kade Grundy on the mound for the Eagles would strand the bases full of Jaguars in their second inning, Haab would make it six unanswered with a three-run bomb the very next inning off the scoreboard to put it at a 6-2 Southern advantage.

The offensive would not slow down though, as South Alabama took their turn for a quick response of their own. An Eagle error would score one for the home squad, and pave the way for Ethan Melton to hit a three-run long ball of his own to tie up the ball game after three. They would continue their offensive showing with two more runs in the fourth to not only take back the lead, but score six unanswered of their own.

In relief, Brady Pendley would have a great first few innings on the bump. The junior would allow just one hit and strike out three Jaguars before a four-hit sixth inning pushed the lead to 12-6.

Both offenses would quiet down for the rest of the contest, as only four hits were recorded for the remainder of the night. For the Eagles, Rhett Hammontree would finish strong on the mound, throwing 1.1 innings of clean ball while adding a strikeout.

The Eagles finish the series on Saturday, as impending weather forecasted for Sunday prompted a schedule change. The doubleheader at Stanky Field will begin at 12 PM ET, with the series finale to follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
