TAMPA, Fla. – Georgia Southern softball split day one of the USF-Rawlings Invitational at USF Softball Stadium on Friday. The Eagles dropped game one, 4-1, to Delaware, before walking off game two in the bottom of the seventh, 2-1, over Illinois State.
Game One (Georgia Southern 1, Delaware 4)
Delaware opened the scoring in the second with two solo home runs to get out to an early 2-0 lead. The Blue Hens extended its lead on a double to right center field, but a pop out ended the threat. An RBI infield single in the third stretched the Blue Hen lead, 4-0.
Georgia Southern (1-1) got on the board in the sixth on a
Madi Gillespie RBI hit by pitch.
In their first collegiate start,
Payton Cushman went 2-for-3 with two doubles and
Braelyn Queen recorded her first career hit.
Morgan Kendrick (0-1) tossed 2.2 innings in the loss allowing four runs on five hits. In relief,
Maddie Johnson tossed 3.1 innings allowing just two hits.
Game Two (Georgia Southern 2, Illinois State 1)
Georgia Southern struck first in the bottom of the opening frame to take an early, 1-0, lead. With runners on second and third, Gillespie recorded a two-out RBI single to drive in one as Cushman was thrown out at home to limit the threat.
Valerie Combs reached on a single up the middle and
Payton Cushman doubled to right center to put runners in scoring position.
Illinois State evened the score in the second after a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt to move the runner, a single through the right side pushed a run across.

Emma Davis who drew a hit by pitch. Davis advanced to second on as Delanie Thame recorded an infield single.
Bailey Holland (1-0) earned her first victory of the season tossing a completeg seven inning game allowing just one run on three hits and added seven strikeouts.
Four Eagles tallied a multi-hit contest including Thames, Combs, Gillespie, and
Kayla Christensen.
Emma Davis and Cushman added a hit each in the contest.
