Statesboro, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (3-0, 0-0 SBC) will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (3-0, 0-0 ACC) for both team's first midweek matchup of the 2025 season on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Georgia Southern swept Western Carolina in their last series, winning by an average margin of 6.3 runs over the Catamounts. On the series, the Eagles hit five home runs, including ones on back-to-back days from both
Sean Smith and
Cade Parker. the left fielder Smith is hitting 3-7, while also getting on base five separate occasions via walks and hit by pitch. The Eagles pitching also managed to keep WCU off the scoreboard for 17 straight innings, thanks to the squad of
Jax Lewis,
Davis Smith,
Jacob Phillips, and
Brady Pendley. For Georgia Tech, they come off of a sweep against a familiar Sun Belt foe in Old Dominion, including a 7-3 Saturday victory that came in the form of a Drew Burress walkoff grand slam. Additionally, in their opening day win over the Monarchs, they escaped with just a 3-2 win and only had three hits.
Georgia Tech comfortably controls the all-time series, 89-23, and have won the last five meetings. Georgia Southern have only won twice in the last 18 matchups, with those wins coming in 2022 and 2014. In the last meeting between the two, Georgia Tech sneaked out a 5-4 win in Atlanta. The Eagles cut the deficit to just one with a two-run
Cade Parker homer, but the rally was cut short in the ninth inning.
Due to the transfer portal, the Eagles and Yellow Jackets have received numerous players from one another. The Eagles brought in senior outfielder
Jett Lovett and redshirt-sophomore third baseman
Nico Senese, both of which started all three games for the Eagles' opening series. The Yellow Jackets brought in the trio of
Kent Schmidt,
Porter Buursema, and Jalen Payden. Payden and Buursema both saw the mound in the Yelllow Jackets' opening series with Schmidt starting all three games at first base. It will be the first time these five players will face off against their former teams.
Georgia Southern Athletic Marketing will host Tater Tuesday during the game. Fans can purchase a limited-time option of loaded fries from the concessions stands and enjoy a spud-tastic night at J.I.
The Eagles will turn to sophomore lefty
Jevarra Martin for his first appearance as an Eagle, having transferred from South Carolina. The Yellow Jackets will start freshman right-hander Connor Chicoli who will also make his first collegiate appearance on Tuesday night.
