Georgia Southern plays in its first team competition of the spring as the Eagles travel to Gainesville, Florida, for the Gators Invitational with 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday. It's the 48th playing of the tournament, and the Eagles are competing in it for the 36th time. Southern had played in the event 22 consecutive times before missing last year's event, but is back this year.
Georgia Southern took second place in 2023, thanks in part to Mason Williams, who shot an 11-under-par 199 and tied for first place. Southern won the even tin the 1979-80 season and Jodie Mudd won the individual title in 1982.Â
Parker Claxton is the only member of the current team to have played in this event in 2023.Â
The Eagles kicked off the spring by hosting their annual individual tournament, the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate, at Georgia Southern University Golf Course on Feb. 1 and 2. Claxton shot 8-under to take runner-up honors. Five Eagles in all finished in the top 20.
The Eagles are paired with North Florida and Penn State for the first two rounds and will tee off holes 1-5 in a modified shotgun start at 7:45 a.m.
Following the event, Georgia Southern will have two weeks off before competing in the Colleton River Collegiate March 2-3 as the Eagles look for their fourth straight win at that tournament.
