CONWAY, S.C. - Georgia Southern women's soccer earned a point on the road on Saturday evening, playing host Coastal Carolina to a 2-2 draw at the CCU Soccer Complex.
The Eagles moved to 2-9-5 overall and 0-4-4 in the Sun Belt with the draw, while Coastal Carolina moves to 3-4-7 overall and 0-1-7 in the league after earning a draw in its sixth straight match. Georgia Southern returns to action on Friday, October 24, hosting UL Monroe in a 6 p.m. contest. It will be Senior Night for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern tallied a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead on the Chanticleers. In the 14th minute, Caitlin Conroy laid a ball off to Erin Wilkins, who sent a long-range shot from the right side towards goal. The drive beat Aris Lamanna high, giving the senior her first career goal for the Eagles and the 1-0 lead.
In the 33rd minute, Conroy again facilitated a score as her through ball found Emma Chapman in the box. Chapman drove to the right side of the goal, then cut a pass across the box to a wide-open Meredith Pugh, who finished right for her first goal of the season and the 2-0 advantage.
Georgia Southern held a 4-2 edge in shots with the 2-0 lead at the break.
Coastal Carolina would then earn the draw with a pair of goals in the match's final five minutes and two seconds, both coming off of set pieces. In the 85th minute, Eefje Botjer's corner kick found the foot of Camryn McKee, who finished to make the score 2-1. Botjer then delivered a free kick from just outside the box on the left side, finding the head of Julia Ziegenfuss in the 89th minute for the match-tying goal.
The Chanticleers held a 14-3 edge in shots in the second half and finished the match with a 16-7 advantage. Lamanna made three saves in net for CCU, while Quinn Wilson made one save on the day for Georgia Southern. Coastal Carolina held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks, and Georgia Southern was whistled for 10 fouls and two offsides, compared to five fouls and two offsides for the Chanticleers.
