No. 25 UCF Hands Women's Tennis 6-1 Loss On Sunday

Georgia Southern finishes season-opening road trip to Florida 1-1, returns home on Saturday to host FGCU

ORLANDO, Fla. - No. 25 UCF women's tennis defeated visiting Georgia Southern, 6-1, on Saturday morning at the USTA National Collegiate Campus' indoor courts in Orlando.

The Knights moved to 1-0 on the Spring while Georgia Southern finished its season-opening Florida trip at 1-1. The Eagles will return to Statesboro on Saturday to open up their home slate with a 10 a.m. matchup with Florida Gulf Coast.

UCF swept all three doubles matches against the Eagles to take the doubles point. The Knights then won straight-set singles wins at No. 2 through No. 5 singles to clinch the team victory.

Freshman Evelyn Warkentin battled No. 85-ranked Sophia Biolay to three sets, losing a 10-point third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 6-1, (7-10). Freshman Hannah Eifert picked up the Eagles' lone point at No. 6 singles, prevailing in a 10-point third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (3), (10-5) for her first collegiate dual match singles win.

"I think we came in with a really good amount of fight today against UCF," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "They are very talented and very well coached. Even with the loss, we found so much that we can work on collectively for the whole squad. Evy and Hannah played really well today. Evy came up a bit short and I believe she now understands a bit more of what she needs to do in order to be successful against the top players in the nation.

"Hannah was an all star today," McCaffrey said. "Playing indoors and in a tough environment, as a freshman, is not easy in any way. Hannah really did a great job of keeping her mind quiet and staying positive. She played some of her best tennis during the most stressful points. That shows a lot of fight and is great that she was able to quiet her mind and play her best during the most challenging moments…all while just a freshman. I feel our doubles was pretty good at times today. We just need to be a little more conservative if we don't feel as if we are playing our best.  This team continues to grow every day and it's certain their best days are ahead of them."
