Washington State Edges Eagles, 1-0, On Thursday

Cougars tally match's lone goal in 51st minute; Georgia Southern travels to Samford on Sunday

ATHENS, Ga. - Washington State tallied a goal in the 51st minute to collect a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern women's soccer on Thursday afternoon in a match played at the Turner Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The Cougars improved to 3-2-2 with the win in only the second meeting between the two schools. Georgia Southern falls to 3-4-1 on the year and will next be in action on Sunday, traveling to former SoCon foe Samford for a 2 p.m. ET matchup against the Bulldogs in Birmingham, Ala.

Washington State had much of the attack in the game's first half, outshooting the Eagles by a 12-2 margin. Georgia Southern goalkeeper Katie Oakley made four first-half saves to keep the match scoreless at the break.

The Cougars got the breakthrough at the 50:09 mark of the contest. A long service from Alena Watts was headed in by Lindsey Turner for the 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles were able to double their shots in the second half, testing Washington State goalkeeper Nadia Cooper a pair of times, but Cooper finished the match with three saves and the shutout for the Cougars.

Washington State ended the day with a 20-6 edge in shots. Oakley finished with six saves in net for the Eagles. Each team had four corner kicks on the day, and Georgia Southern was whistled for 14 fouls and one offsides, compared to five fouls and three offsides for the Cougars.

"We fought hard against a very athletic Washington State team," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "But we just couldn't find a way to break them down. I was proud of our effort, which was fantastic, but we weren't able to find a goal tonight."
