Fifth-year senior is committed to giving her all in her final season with Georgia Southern women's soccer

STATESBORO – Georgia Southern women's soccer player Faith Phillips is keeping her focus forward as she goes into her final year with the Eagles. After playing in all 19 matches during the 2023 season, scoring three goals and one assist, Phillips is motivated to continue growing as an athlete and an individual.

Phillips grew up playing many sports in her hometown of McDonough, Ga., including basketball, track, swimming and soccer. As Phillips continued in her athletic career, she found her love for soccer, which led her to stick with the sport throughout her college career.

"I've learned resilience, teamwork, and discipline. [Soccer] has shaped me into the person I've become," said Phillips. She committed to the University of Alabama Birmingham as a sophomore in high school and transferred to Georgia Southern after her freshman year at UAB.

"I committed to Georgia Southern only a few weeks into being in the transfer portal. I just knew this was a place that I would like; it's a small college town, and the team was so nice and welcoming to me," said Phillips. Phillips joined the Georgia Southern team as a sophomore in 2021.

Phillips instantly made her presence known in her first season with the Eagles. Phillips made 18 starts and scored her first collegiate goal from 30 yards out in overtime, securing the win for the Eagles in the Sun Belt Conference over the Texas States in 2021. "I remember it being a home game, and that game was a grind, so scoring that goal made all our hard work worth it," said Phillips, naming that goal one of her most memorable moments.

The Eagle forward comes from a family of college athletes. Her dad played collegiate football at the University of West Georgia, and both of her sisters currently play soccer at Georgia College and State University. Faith cherished playing alongside her twin sister Grace throughout high school, and now their younger sister Kate gets to play alongside her older sister Grace at Georgia College and State University. Phillips shared that her family is her motivation when facing challenges in her career.

Phillips has had to overcome the challenge of injury not once but twice in her athletic career. Phillips tore her right ACL in the first game of her senior season in high school. Due to COVID, her freshman soccer season at UAB was moved to the spring. Phillips was able to recover from her injury and play in her freshman season. Phillips tore her left ACL in 2022 against Troy, ending her junior season early.

If she could advise her younger self, Phillips said she would say, "Don't give up, good things happen to those who work hard."

Phillips has her eyes set on winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament this year. "We've won our regular season conference, but we've never won the tournament, and after making it to the tournament championship my sophomore year and losing to South Alabama, it's been our goal," said Phillips.

When asked if there was a time when she felt most accomplished, Phillips shared her resilient mindset. "I'm always searching for more, so no. You can always improve, and I never settle," said Phillips.

Phillips graduated from Georgia Southern with her bachelor's degree in exercise science in July 2024 and plans on continuing her academic career by attending nursing school. Phillips plans on starting nursing school in January 2025 and is interested in becoming an operating room nurse.

Phillips plans to make the most of her final year with the Eagles and isn't focusing on the end just yet. "We aren't done yet," said Phillips. "We've got a long way to go, and I'm trying to have fun, enjoy this last year, and take care of business."
