Rubber match is set for noon tomorrow

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern softball team fell 6-3 in game two of its Sun Belt Conference series against Troy on Saturday afternoon at Beautiful Eagle Field.

Georgia Southern (23-19, 6-11 SBC) struck first in the second frame after Janai Conklin drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the inning, Jess Mazur put the Eagles in front 1-0 on an RBI single to right center field.

Troy (30-17, 10-7 SBC) responded in the top half of the third inning on a solo home run to even the score, 1-1.

Kyla Maxwell answered with her first collegiate home run a solo shot to straight centerfield to put the Eagle in front 2-1 in the third.

Delanie Thames extended the lead in the fourth with her third home run of the season making it 3-1.

The Trojans took the lead in the fifth inning posting three runs on three hits. Three base hits in the inning and a two out Eagle miscue put the Trojans in front 4-3. The Eagles threatened to tie the game in the frame with two runners in scoring position but a groundout back to the pitcher ended the inning.

Troy extended its lead in the sixth blasting a two-run home run to go up 6-3.

The Eagle offense scattered six hits in the contest including two home runs. Five Eagles recorded hits as Maxwell led the offense going 2-for-3 in the contest.

Alana Barnard (5-4) picked up the loss in the circle to move to 5-4 on the season. Barnard tossed five complete innings allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. In relief, Bailey Holland tossed two complete innings allowing two runs on two hits.
