NORFOLK, Va. - The Georgia Southern baseball team dropped a 11-1 decision in seven innings to the Old Dominion Monarchs on March 16.
The Monarchs (12-7) took to the board first in the bottom of the first inning, when a misplay at first base scored Kyle Edwards to take a quick 1-0 lead. An RBI-single by Evan Holman and a two-RBI double by Kenny Evari put the lead up to 4-0 after the first frame of action.
After an extra run scored in the bottom of the second inning for the Monarchs, the bats were quiet for both sides until the bottom of the sixth inning. From there, the first six batters to reach all scored, including back-to-back home runs by Levari and Jake Ticer to take the 11-0 lead after six innings.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Eagles (8-10) were able to salvage a run to prevent the shutout after ODU pitcher Brandon Pond threw a ball to the backstop, allowing
Josh Tate to score. The half inning ended without any more scoring, securing the 11-1 win for ODU.
The new Sun Belt rule states that any conference game where a team has a 10-run lead in or after the seventh inning will end at that time. As ODU had a 10-run going into the home half of the seventh inning, the game was called there.
