Pitching Powers Eagles to Gritty Win, 2-1

Stellar pitching and a homer make the difference

NORFOLK, Va. - Ty Fisher's second quality start of the season, combined with Joey White's two inning save, salvaged the finale for the Eagles against the Old Dominion Monarchs, 2-1. Georgia Southern moves to 9-10 and 1-2 in the Sun Belt after the victory.

The Monarchs (12-8) took the board first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring an unearned run from a fielding error. That run would only the only run plated by the Monarchs all day.

In the top of the fourth inning, Sam Blancato walked to lead off the inning. After a Jarrett Brown groundout, Kent Schmidt took a fastball to set the count at 0-1. Trent Buchanan threw the same pitch in the same location, which Schmidt swung on, watching it carry to right field before it fell outside of the wall, notching his first collegiate homer, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs.

Neither side scored for the remainder of the game, leaning on the arms to settle the score. Fisher pitched for the first seven innings of the contest, tossing 93 pitches with four hits, an unearned run, and only one walk with six strikeouts. Fisher would earn the win for his efforts.

White came in in the top of the eighth inning, facing the top of the order. He got two flyouts to left field and a strikeout to end that inning, then promptly went one-two-three in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game in Southern's favor. White earned his first collegiate save in the victory.

Old Dominion's Buchanan took the loss for giving up the go-ahead run.

Schmidt had his third three-hit game of his freshman campaign, leading the team both in hits and RBIs with two.
