STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team will take on the Jacksonville Dolphins for the first of three games this season on Wednesday, February 28, at John Sessions Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Georgia Southern brings a 2-5 record into the match-up after falling two games to one against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the previous weekend's action. In those games, some Eagles had career moments, such as
Jonathan Jaime's first career home run late in the first game, or
JP Herrholz's first Division I hit late into the third game of the series. Jacksonville carries a 3-3 record into the game after dropping a weekend series to the Delaware Blue Hens, also falling two games to one. In both squad's previous midweek action, both played host to in-state ACC schools, with both teams falling to those teams by a score of 7-4 (JU lost to Florida State and GS lost to Georgia Tech).
Georgia Southern leads the series by 18 games with a 78-60 record. The Eagles have also won the previous 13 match-ups with the Dolphins and six in a row in Jacksonville.
With 138 games played in the series, JU is Georgia Southern's third-most played opponent in program history. By season's end, JU and GT will be tied for second-most played in program history at 141. Mercer is Georgia Southern's most played opponent with 171 meetings to date.
Last season, Georgia Southern swept two games against Jacksonville, winning both by one run. In the first game,
Zane Faulk's RBI-single in the ninth inning broke a 4-4 tie and set the Eagles up for the 5-4 victory, with
Jay Thompson collecting his seventh save of the season that night. In the second game, the Eagles scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning to set an unreachable mark by the Dolphins, winning 9-8.
The Eagles have announced that right-hander
Ga'von Wray will get his first start of the season against the Dolphins. Wray holds a 3.37 ERA with no record, but does have a save after collective a one-pitch save against Maryland. The Dolphins have announced that righty Blake Barquin will start, who carries a 3.86 ERA with no record.
