Wire-to-Wire Domination Leads Volleyball to Sweep at Louisiana

Eagles hold Louisiana to Sun Belt opponent-low 28 kills in win

LAFAYETTE, La.– Winning the opening set 25-14 and never looking back, Georgia Southern volleyball (20-4, 10-3 Sun Belt) shut down Louisiana (8-16, 4-9) in straight sets to earn its 20th win of the 2024 season.

"I'm proud of the effort tonight on the road to grab win no. 20 on the season," head coach Chad Willis said. "Our group is focused on gaining momentum heading into the conference tournament and I thought we stayed dialed into the game plan and our priorities tonight. We'll need another solid effort from the service line going into tomorrow's match."

Recording just 11 errors on the night, the Eagles opened with a two-error set, winning 25-14. Lydia Seymour's kill first put the Eagles up 7-3, which would then be extended to 12-5 after another Seymour marker.

Up 14-10, a 6-0 spread highlighted by a Reagan Barth ace allowed the Eagles to go into cruise control. They won five of the last six points and took the first set after a Jillian Gray kill.

The Eagles bent but never broke in the second set. The Cajuns were the first to 15, however, after the media timeout, GS responded with a 5-0 run featuring two Gray aces and kills from Seymour, Barth and Paige Powers. A pair of set errors gave the Eagles a 25-19 win.

Trading the first two points of the third frame, the Eagles left no doubt following. Maggie Sale picked up a block and a kill as the Eagles went on a 6-0 run and further extended the lead to 10-3 after a Cajuns attack error.

Exchanging the next several points, the Eagles went on a 4-1 run and closed out the set and match with a 25-18 win after another set error by UL.

Barth led the way with 11 kills, hitting .300 and adding three aces and six digs to round out a great all-around performance.

"I'm having the most fun I've ever had playing volleyball right now," she said. "We have six seniors that mean so much to this program, we're playing for them and all having a great time doing it."

Powers contributed ten kills also to reach double digits, while Ashlyn Lovett led all players with a match-high 14 digs. Kirsten Barrett continued her great season by recording 34 assists in the three sets.

The Eagles held the Cajuns to a Sun Belt opponent-low 28 kills in the victory. With the win, the Eagles have earned back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2012 and 2013.

The season finale will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Louisiana.
