NEW ORLEANS — Georgia Southern had 206 student-athletes honored by the Sun Belt Conference for their work in the classroom with the yearly release of the Academic Commissioner's List and Honor Roll on Wednesday by the league. It's the second-most number of honorees for the Eagles since joining the Sun Belt in 2014.
The 206 total student-athletes includes 121 named to the Commissioner's List and 85 to the Honor Roll. In addition, 12 student-athletes earned the 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award.
Women's soccer had largest number of Eagle student-athletes on the SBC Commissioner's List with 20, followed next by women's cross country/track and field with 19. Football had the most student-athletes on the SBC Honor Roll with 20, while women's soccer and football tied for the most overall honorees with 27, followed by baseball with 25.
As a league, the Sun Belt Conference placed nearly 3,000 student-athletes to the Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll for the 2022-23 school year. Those recognized include 1,621 student-athletes on the Commissioner's List and 1,191 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll. In addition, 140 student-athletes earned the 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award.
The Commissioner's List honors student-athletes who earned a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) or better during the 2020-21 academic year while the Academic Honor Roll honors those student-athletes who maintained a GPA between 3.00 and 3.49 for the academic year. The 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award recognizes student-athletes at FBS football-sponsoring institutions who earned their undergraduate degrees between September 1, 2022 and August 31, 2023 and compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or better upon graduation. In addition, the student-athletes must have participated in at least two years of NCAA intercollegiate athletics at an FBS institution.
"We celebrate the academic achievements of these remarkable student-athletes," said Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill. "We're extremely proud of their ability to shine at academics while competing in their sports at the highest level."
All Sun Belt Conference programs in the sports of beach volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball boasted an average GPA of 3.0 or better.
Across the entire Sun Belt Conference, beach volleyball and women's golf student-athletes recorded the highest collective GPA at 3.61.
