NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Sun Belt Conference has announced Georgia Southern goalkeeper
Nate Martinez has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Martinez had 10 saves in two games between Mercer and West Virginia, which helped the Eagles earn its first positive result against Mercer in six years and its second draw against a nationally-ranked team in program history. Against Mercer, Martinez saved three shots while only conceding a single goal, helping the Eagles earn a 1-1 draw against the Bears. Against second-ranked West Virginia, Martinez saved a career-high seven shots against an aggressive WVU attack, keeping the offense scoreless and earning a huge conference point for the Eagles in a scoreless draw with the Mountaineers. Martinez currently leads a defensive unit that has only given up five scores all season, and Martinez himself has 22 saves on 77 shots faced this season for a .815 save percentage this season.
The Eagles are on the road to take on the UAB Blazers tonight, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. ET. The Eagles will return home on Sunday, Oct. 1, to face off against top-ranked Marshall.
