Eagles raise over $15,000 and earn high marks in the water
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team unofficially opened the season at Lake Lanier participating in the Swim Across America charity event. This event raises money for pediatric cancer research, and the Eagles were able to make a lasting impressing during their first year participating in the event.
"Swim Across America was a HUGE success for our program," said head coach Allyson Sweeney. "In our first year of participation, the team was able to raise over $15,000 between our SAA team page & Instagram fundraisers - all to be donated to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta & Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center in the name of cancer research. It was an incredibly rewarding experience - getting to interact with individuals & families directly impacted by this event's contributions. We're already looking forward to next year's opportunity and making this experience part of our program's culture & DNA for years to come."
While not an official scored event, three Eagles enjoyed success in the water, placing in the top 50 in the 250 swimmers at Lake Lanier. Zuri Clavo finished eighth overall with a time of 1:06:45.64, but Clavo finished first among all women participating in SAA. To round out the top three finishers for the Eagles, Emma Scruggs finished 33rd overall with a time of 1:11:49.19, sixth of all women, and freshman Chiara Alberti finished right behind Scruggs with a time of 1:11:49.84, placing 34th overall and seventh amongst women.
All results for all swimmers who participated are listed below.
Georgia Southern opens the season on the road at the UNF Osprey Invitational on Friday, Sept. 29. The first home meet for the Eagles will be a swimming only dual meet with Gardner-Webb and SCAD on Oct. 7.
