Top-seeded Old Dominion notches the 4-0 win; Georgia Southern finishes the season 19-6
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - Top-seeded and No. 33-ranked Old Dominion ended fifth-seeded Georgia Southern's run in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals with a 4-0 victory on Saturday morning in Peachtree City, Ga.
The Eagles finish the 2023 season with a 19-6 overall mark, tying the school single-season win record previously set in 2021. Old Dominion (17-4) moves on to the championship match where it will face either James Madison or Marshall on Sunday.
Old Dominion captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Eagles' duo of Sonja Keranen and Ana Tsitavets held a 5-3 lead at No. 2 doubles when play was stopped because the doubles point had been clinched.
The Monarchs then clinched the match with straight-set singles wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
"I am so incredibly proud of this squad," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "What a season we've had, and none of us can be upset with what we have accomplished. Old Dominion was simply on fire today. In the end, I simply did not have the team ready to have an answer for they way in which they played. We put up a good fight in doubles but ODU had answers for every single move we made. It looked as if we were about to take the #2 match but we ran out of time.
"In singles we put up a valiant effort. Our plan A in each of our matches had been met with very competitive responses. And the same for our plan B and plan C. ODU's physicality simply won out. Today was Liv's last match and we are so extremely happy she joined us. What an impact that woman has made. We are excited that she will continue with us as a volunteer assistant in the future. I adore and love my team and the championship culture they have created. We will for sure be back and continue to grow for 23/24!"
