Georgia Southern uses a big 14-3 five-inning victory in the final game to take series from the Panthers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ATLANTA - Georgia Southern used a 15-hit attack to split a Sun Belt Conference softball doubleheader from host Georgia State on Saturday, claiming the series from the Panthers. Georgia State took game one of the doubleheader, 6-3, but the Eagles won the second game, 14-3, in five innings.

The split secured a second straight Sun Belt series win for the Eagles (16-22, 6-9 SBC) as Georgia Southern has now won five of its last six in league play. Georgia State moves to 16-27 overall and 5-10 with the split. The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, hosting Mercer for a midweek doubleheader in Statesboro beginning at 4 p.m.

The 14 runs scored in the final game of the series are the most for Georgia Southern against a Sun Belt Conference opponent since the Eagles picked up a 17-3 win in five innings at Appalachian State on April 3, 2015.

GAME ONE: Georgia State 6, Georgia Southern 3

The Panthers used a four-run fifth inning to collect the come-from-behind win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

A solo home run Maia Mumpfield put Georgia State in front in the second inning. The Eagles scored twice in the third, on RBI singles from Courtney Ball and Faith Barth, to take a 2-1 advantage.

Bailee Richardon's solo home run in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 2-all, but Ball scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-2.

The deciding four-run frame started with an RBI single by Chloe Nadler, then Ashton Schroyer delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing three-run double for the final tally.

Emily Hodnett (5-10) picked up the win in the circle for the Panthers, giving up seven hits and three runs in seven innings of work, walking three while striking out six. Alana Barnard (1-4) took the loss for the Eagles in the circle, giving up seven hits and six runs - three earned - in six innings of work, walking one while striking out four.

Barth's 2-for-3 day with an RBI led the Eagles offensively in game one.

GAME TWO: Georgia Southern 14, Georgia State 3 (5 inn.)

The Eagles broke open a three-run game with a six-run fourth inning to claim the series with the 14-3 win over the Panthers in five innings.

Janai Conklin and Dejah Mills collected back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the first to stake the Eagles to a quick 2-0 lead. The lead grew to five runs in the top of the second on an RBI single by Courtney Ball and a two-run double by Emma Davis.

Georgia State closed to within three in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Emily Brown.

The Eagles put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth. Georgia Southern loaded the bases with nobody out, then Mills launched her first career grand slam to make the score 9-2. Sam Vinson followed with a pinch-hit RBI single and Ball delivered an RBI groundout to make the score 11-2

Georgia Southern tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Olivia Creamer and a two-run single from Katie Perkins. Georgia State got a run in the top of the fifth but it would be all allowed by reliever Kastin Belogorska (1-1) in three innings of relief.

Belogorska limited the Panthers to just two hits and the lone run, walking two, in three innings to pick up her first win of the season. Hallie Adams (4-10) took the loss for the Panthers, giving up two hits and two runs in one inning of work, walking one.

Mills finished the game 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBI, while Perkins went 3-for-3 with two RBI. The Eagles had five hits and a home run among their 15 hits in the contest.
