Georgia Southern competes in the Sun Belt Championship April 16-18 at the LPGA International Hills Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. All three rounds will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
It's the fifth time the Sun Belt will host its women's golf championship at LPGA International, and the Eagles have finished third or better each time. The Eagles won the title last season and finished third in the previous three. The Eagles have placed fourth or better in five of the six Sun Belt Championships that have been held since the school began its women's golf program.
Five teams in the field are ranked nationally in the top-100 by Golfstat, including the Eagles (88). James Madison (71), Old Dominion (86), ULM (87) and Texas State (92) are the others.
Georgia Southern is coming off a second-place finish at the Mimosa Hills Invitational April 4. Abby Newton shot 73-71-72=216 (E) to earn medalist honors, her first collegiate victory. Karlee Vardas tied for 13th, while Regina Plascencia and Taylor Oberparleiter tied for 22nd.
The Eagles will start with the same five who played at Mimosa Hills, and Alex Stevenson will serve as the super sub. Newton is the lone Eagle in the lineup this week who was in the lineup at the Sun Belt Championship last season and the only Eagle with experience playing in the tournament at LPGA International. The junior finished T11 last season and T38 in 2021.
The Eagles are paired with Texas State in Sunday's first round and are scheduled tee off the first hole at 8:45 a.m.
