STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team is set to host the Big Ten's Rutgers Scarlet Knights for a three-game tilt, beginning on Friday, March 10. First pitch from J.I. Clements Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles and the Scarlet Knights have only met twice in history, with both matches coming from a two-game series played in Statesboro on March 21 and 22, 1969. Rutgers would take the first game but the Eagles would take the second game to split the two-game series, leaving the all-time record at 1-1 for both schools for the following 54 years.
The Eagles carry a 7-6 record into the game after dropping both midweek games to Georgia, one in neutral stie action at SRP Park and one at J.I. Clements Stadium. Prior to the UGA games, the Eagles took two of three from the UCF Knights in Orlando, Fla., putting up a combined 30 runs in two games. Rutgers carries a 4-7 record into Statesboro, beating Wagner in the midweek contest, 18-3. Prior to the Wagner game, the Scarlet Knights were swept by the UNCG Spartans, who Georgia Southern faced in last year's Statesboro Regional.
Both squads won over 40 games last year, with Georgia Southern finishing the year with a 41-20 record and hosting the Statesboro Regional, while Rutgers amassed a 44-15 record.
The Eagles will bring out its familiar rotation for this series, with southpaw
Ty Fisher (1-0, 3.07 ERA) taking the mound Friday night, righty
Ben Johnson (3-0, 3.12 ERA) throwing on Saturday, and righty
Zachary Harris (0-2, 9.72 ERA) dealing on Sunday. Rutgers has announced that its rotation will be RHP Drew Conover (0-1, 4.50 ERA) on Friday, RHP Christian Coppola (0-1, 2.70 ERA) on Saturday, and RHP Jake Marshall (0-1, 5.59 ERA) on Sunday.
