STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team is set to host the Old Dominion Monarchs for a three-game conference tilt at J.I. Clements Stadium, beginning on March 31, 2023. First pitch for Friday night's series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Georgia Southern comes into the contest with a 13-12 record after holding one of the nation's most potent offenses in Georgia to just two runs on six hits on Wednesday night. The Eagles had big performances offensively by
Jarrett Brown (4-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI) and
Luke Hatcher (2-for-4, grand slam, 5 RBI), while also keeping the UGA offense locked down with strong defense, including two Charlie Condon home runs robbed at the top of the outfield wall by
J.C. Peacher. Old Dominion comes into the contest at 20-5 after falling against Virginia, 8-1, on Tuesday night. Last weekend, ODU took its first Sun Belt series from Marshall by winning the Saturday and Sunday games.
This will be the first time since 1996 that the two teams will face off against each other. In 1996, the two were paired together in the NCAA Atlantic Regional in Clemson, S.C. The Eagles defeated the Monarchs by a final score of 6-0 to take a 3-1 lead in the all-time series and to advance in the regional before falling to West Virginia and Tennessee.
Georgia Southern will throw out its regular rotation, beginning with lefty
Ty Fisher (2-2, 3.50 ERA) taking the mound on Friday night and righty
Ben Johnson (4-1, 5.08 ERA) facing the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon. Sunday's starter is yet to be named. Meanwhile, the Monarchs will throw LHP Blake Morgan (2-2, 4.91 ERA) on Friday, RHP Sam Armstrong (5-0, 2.16 ERA) on Saturday, and LHP Dylan Brown (2-0, 2.28 ERA) on Sunday.
