ATLANTA– Georgia Southern men's basketball (0-1) dropped its season opener in Atlanta on Monday night, falling 84-62 to Georgia Tech (1-0) at McCamish Pavilion.
"We have a lot of things to clean up offensively, but defensively, I thought we gave ourselves a chance in the first half," head coach
Charlie Henry said. "In the second half, they wore us out hitting the pocket against our blitz. We wanted toughness and discipline for 40 minutes, but we can't lose on discipline."
The first five minutes of the game were slow-developing, as
Tyren Moore buried a three-pointer to give the Eagles an early 7-2 advantage.
Georgia Tech went ahead 15-12, but a timely four-point play by
Cam Bryant put the Eagles back in front 16-15 at around the ten-minute mark.
The Yellow Jackets regained momentum, but it was short-lived as the Eagles came from down six to make it a one-point game at the half.
Tyren Moore and
Jamar Franklin each recorded eight points in the first frame.
The second half saw the Yellow Jackets take flight, as they shot 17-of-30 and 9-14 from three. The Eagles took a brief 38-37 lead after an
Avantae Parker bucket, and were tied at the first media timeout, but got outscored 42-20 for the remainder of the game.
Franklin was one point off a career-high with 17 points, while Moore joined him in double digits with ten. In his first collegiate action, freshman
Collin Kuhl had six points and five rebounds, the latter of which was tied for the team lead.
The Eagles shot 40.4 percent overall, but just 27 percent from beyond the three-point line.
Georgia Southern will be back in action on Saturday in Ypsilanti, taking on Eastern Michigan in the first leg of the MAC/SBC Challenge.
