SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Luke Koenig shot an even-par 210 to record his second-straight top-15 finish and the Eagles improved their team score each round as the Georgia Southern men's golf team wrapped up play Monday at the Fighting Irish Classic hosted by Notre Dame, played at Warren Golf Course. The field of 14 featured eight NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.
Parker Claxton came out of the gate strong in round one, shooting a season-low 67 with three birdies and 15 pars. Koenig shot a 69-68 on the first day to head into the final day three-under and tied for third place. In the final round, freshman
Brycen Jones paced the squad with an even-par 70 with four birdies to finish the event strong.
Koenig finished the event in a tie for 11th place, coming off a tie for third at the JT Poston Invitational last week. He led the Eagles with 11 birdies over the three rounds. Claxton tied for the tournament lead with 40 pars while Jones was among the leaders with 10 birdies.
Quote from Coach Carter Collins:
"This wasn't the team result we came up to South Bend for, but I'm proud of the team continuing to fight throughout the event and scratch out what we could in an elite field. As coaches, we have to do a better job preparing this team for tougher courses and we will continue working toward that.
"Congratulations to
Luke Koenig on another great week. It's only his fourth Georgia Southern start, and the future is bright for him. We can feel progress each week and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm really excited for what's ahead."
