PREVIEW: Eagles and Gamecocks Meet in Statesboro for First Time Ever

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team will take on the South Carolina Gamecocks in a Sun Belt Conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Eagle Field at Erk Russell Park. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Georgia Southern carries a 1-7-5 record with an 0-3-2 conference record into the match after dropping its previous match on Friday, Oct. 13. South Carolina holds a 4-6-2 record with a 2-2-1 SBC record into the match falling to seventh-ranked West Virginia at home on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Georgia Southern is 0-8-2 all-time against the Gamecocks, with all 10 of the match-ups occurring in Columbia, S.C. This match will be the first time ever that South Carolina visits Statesboro. The two teams played once in the 1980's, sparingly in the 1990's, and did not meet again until 2015, where they have played every year but two (2017-18).

With four games remaining until the conclusion of the regular season, conference points become more important than ever. The Sun Belt plays its top eight teams for the conference tournament, with the top two teams hosting the tournament matches. Georgia Southern and Kentucky are currently tied for ninth in the conference with two points each, meaning if the season ended today, both teams would miss the cut. Both squads are one point behind James Madison, who is currently the last team in the field.
