STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's tennis team swept The Citadel in a doubleheader at the Wallis Tennis Center, 6-1 and 7-0, on Saturday.
GAME ONE
In the first match of the day, the Eagles (2-1) raced out to a quick start in the doubles matches, with duo
Valentin Dun and
Alex Suk at the No. 3 position taking the first match with a 6-1 victory. In the No. 1 position, duo
Jacob Mitchell and
Aaron Williams took a 6-2 victory to set the Eagles up with a 1-0 lead on the morning.
Laurent Julia Calac and
Dimitris Paliouras fell to the duo from The Citadel (1-7) at the No. 2 position, 4-6.
In the singles, the Eagles wasted no time pouncing on the Bulldogs, with Williams taking two quick 6-0, 6-1 victories at the No. 2 position.
Pierre Mouesca at the No. 2 position also secured his victory with 6-0, 6-1 victories, giving the Eagles a commanding 3-0 lead on the day.
Valentin Dun clinched the match for the Eagles at the No. 5 position with a pair of 6-2 wins, but the match would continue on from there. The Eagles suffered their only defeat in the first match at the No. 4 position when Julia Calac fell to The Citadel's Kamienicki, 4-6, 4-6. However, at the No. 1 position, Paliouras battled back after a 7-5 victory in the first set to win in dominating fashion in the second set, 6-1, to get the Eagles to a 5-1 lead. At the No. 6 position, Suk defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-2, to finish off the first home match for Georgia Southern.
GAME TWO
The doubles matches in the second match saw the Eagles tied1-1 after Mitchell and Mouesca at the No. 2 position won (6-0) and Williams and Julia Calac fell at the No. 1 position (3-6). In the No. 3 position, Dun and Suk battled back from an early deficit to take the early advantage in the second match.
In the singles matches, The Citadel threatened with early leads in many of the matches, but the Eagles overcame those to win all six matches, starting with Julia Calac (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 3 position. In the No. 2 position, Paliouras crusied to a 6-2, 6-0 victory. In the No. 5 position, Suk fought hard to finish with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. At the No. 6 position,
Alex Amacher came out on top after a tough 7-6 first set, and then dominated in the second set, 6-0, which put the Eagles up 5-0 on the day. At the No. 1 position, Williams fought back from an early deficit and defeated his opponent, 6-4, 6-3. Finally, at the No. 4 position, it took a super tiebreaker to declare the winner, but Dun fought back from a 5-7 loss in the first set to take a 6-3 victory in the second set, and came out on top of the super tiebreaker, 10-8, to give the Eagles its first sweep of the season.

The Eagles will host North Florida at the Wallis Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. The time has been pushed back to 1 p.m. due to incoming rain to the Statesboro area.
