Eagles Notch First Win Of 2022, Down UNF 3-1

Georgia Southern scores twice in the second half to defeat the Ospreys on Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern used a pair of second-half goals to notch its first win of 2022 with Thursday afternoon's 3-1 win at the University of North Florida.

The Eagles move to 1-1-1 on the young campaign, while North Florida falls to 1-1. Georgia Southern will next make the program's first trip to Arizona, flying out to take on Northern Arizona on Thursday, September 1, as well as Arizona State on Sunday, September 4.

Heavy rains on Thursday afternoon forced the match between the Ospreys and the Eagles to be played on the turf practice field adjacent to Hodges Stadium. North Florida had the run of play early, recording the game's first four shots, but it was the Eagles who took advantage offensively as redshirt freshman Ellie McIntyre placed a shot just inside the far post, getting an assist from redshirt sophomore Elis Nemtsov in the 28th minute to give Georgia Southern a 1-0 lead. That score would stay going into halftime, with UNF holding a 4-2 edge in shots.

In the second half, a misplay by the Eagles at midfield resulted in a counter attack by the Ospreys, with Allie Fekany carrying the ball all the way from midfield down the right flank and scoring the equalizer in the 58th minute.

Georgia Southern would break the deadlock thanks to a set piece as sophomore Smith Cathey out-jumped a pair of Ospreys to head in a corner kick from freshman Erin Wilkins in the 65th minute to put the Eagles back on top. Another corner kick would lead to the clincher as, after the corner was cleared only to the top of the 18', McIntyre headed the ball left to Nemtsov, who volleyed the ball over UNF keeper Sarah Barrentine and into the net for the final 3-1 margin.

"I'm proud of the girls," Georgia Southern Head Coach Chris Adams said about his team delivering the win on his birthday. "We played really well on Sunday against UAB, but we did not have a very good performance in the second half. Tonight, we came out in the second half, and mind you we conceded, but we quickly regained our bearings and got back to what we do, which is become dangerous. We created two set pieces and executed to put the game away. We talked all week about playing a complete game, and I think we got that."

The shot totals finished tied at 11-apiece. Freshman Katie Oakley made three saves in net to notch her first collegiate win, while Barrentine made a pair of saves in the loss for UNF. Georgia Southern had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, including a 6-1 edge in the second half. The Ospreys were whistled for eight fouls, compared to six for the Eagles, and each team was offsides three times on the day.
