FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Georgia Southern played Northern Arizona to an 0-0 draw in the first contest played in the state of Arizona in Eagle women's soccer history.
The visiting Eagles moved to 1-1-2 on the season with the tie in front of an announced crowd of 777 fans at Max Spilsbury Field, while the host Lumberjacks moved to 0-2-2. Georgia Southern will wrap up its Arizona trip on Sunday, taking on Arizona State in a 10 p.m. ET contest from Tempe.
Georgia Southern best chance of the entire game may have been the first one of the night as a volley from Elis Nemtsov just 36 seconds into the match missed just over the crossbar. The Lumberjacks ended up holding a 7-3 edge in shots in the first half, but freshman goalkeeper Katie Oakley collected four saves to make sure the game would be scoreless heading into halftime.
In the second half, things were a little more even offensively as each team recorded eight shots. Northern Arizona goalkeeper Trinity Corcoran made six second-half saves, including two in the final 10 minutes of play on shots by the Eagles that preserved the shutout.
"I'm proud of our team for sticking together tonight, on the road in a hostile environment," Georgia Southern Head Coach Chris Adams said. "It was very animated. NAU tried to rattle us, and they put us under immense pressure, but we bent and did not break. Each team created several chances, and obviously we would have loved to tuck one away to get the win, but the old adage is that you tie on the road and win at home. With all the travel involved getting out here, to recover quickly and put that much energy and fight into the match makes me proud of the team tonight."
Oakley would finish with seven saves on the night in recording her first collegiate shutout for the Eagles. Corcoran finished with eight. Northern Arizona concluded the night by holding a 15-11 edge in shots. Georgia Southern held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks, and the Eagles were whistled for four fouls, while the Lumberjacks committed nine fouls and a pair of offsides.
