Eagles Fall At Georgia In Season Opener, 4-0

Georgia Southern returns to action on Sunday, hosting UAB in its 2022 home opener

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia Southern opened up its 2022 season on Thursday, falling at the University of Georgia by a 4-0 score in the first meeting between the two teams since 2005.

The Bulldogs (1-0) remain unbeaten all-time against the Eagles (0-1) in six meetings. Georgia Southern returns to action on Sunday, hosting UAB in a 1 p.m. home opener at Eagle Field.

"We got what we wanted out of the match," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "We battled and played hard, but we ran into an opponent who capitalizes on your weaknesses. All four of the goals we gave up tonight came on crosses and finishes, so we know what we have to work on before Sunday. We look forward to getting a chance to play our next match quickly so we won't have to rest on this result for too long."

Georgia opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a goal by Tori Penn. The Eagles nearly kept that scoreline until halftime, but the Bulldogs were able to double their lead in the 43rd minute on a goal by Dani Murguia to make it a 2-0 score at the break.

Ellie McIntyre almost pulled one back for the Eagles just under a minute into the second half, testing Georgia keeper Liz Beardsley with a shot, but Beardsley was able to make the save.

Georgia tacked on a third goal in the 55th minute on a tally by Ellie Gilbert, then finished off the night's scoring with a goal in the 82nd minute on a goal by Taylor Rish.

The Bulldogs enjoyed a 29-3 edge in shots on the night. Georgia Southern freshman keeper Katie Oakley made nine saves in her collegiate debut in 81 minutes of action in net, while Beardsley made the one save for UGA. Georgia had an 11-0 edge in corner kicks and the Bulldogs were whistled for nine fouls and two offsides, while the Eagles committed six fouls on the night.
