Women's Tennis Adds Jana Weiss As Graduate Assistant Coach

Former Grand Canyon standout joins the Eagles' coaching staff for 2022-23

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey announced today the addition of former Grand Canyon University standout Jana Weiss as the Eagles' new graduate assistant coach, beginning in the Fall of 2022.

Weiss played for three seasons at Grand Canyon, earning first-team All-WAC singles and second-team All-WAC doubles honors as a junior in 2021. The Klagenfurt, Austria, native played three seasons for the Lopes, collecting 34 combined singles and doubles wins. She transferred to Grand Canyon in 2018 after playing her freshman season at Southern Utah.

She graduated this month from GCU with her bachelor's degree in psychology and will be pursuing her master's degree in professional communication and leadership from Georgia Southern in the Fall.

"We are very excited to welcome Jana Weiss to the Georgia Southern Women's tennis program," Coach McCaffrey said. "I had the pleasure of meeting Jana several years ago while she was looking at schools during her recruiting process, and I closely followed her playing career. What struck me most then, and still to this day is her infectious personality, positive attitude, and optimistic approach to how she interacts with everyone she comes into contact with.

Our athletics staff and support staff take pride in truly putting our student/athletes first, and creating a positive and vibrant atmosphere and I believe Jana fits right into this dynamic. I look forward to welcoming her to Statesboro this fall and getting to work with our ladies right away!"

"After four successful years as a D1 tennis player, I am ready to take the next step and move into the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant," Weiss said. "Georgia Southern gives me the opportunity to join a strong team that strives for greatness on and off the court. The GA position enables me to take on the challenge of creating the perfect work environment for the players to strive and become their best version of themselves. I am excited to become part of this team and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us."

Weiss joins the staff of Coach McCaffrey, who has compiled a 68-44 record over five seasons at Georgia Southern, and third-year volunteer assistant coach Elena Tendero for the upcoming 2022-23 campaign.
