Box Score BOONE, N.C. - Georgia Southern softball plated four runs over the final two innings to defeat Appalachian State, 11-8, on Sunday afternoon in Boone.
The Eagles (9-20, 4-8 SBC) collected a win in the final game of their Sun Belt series with the Mountaineers (19-14, 7-5 SBC). Georgia Southern has notched a win in each of its four league series so far this year. The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, paying a non-conference doubleheader at Charleston Southern beginning at 4 p.m.
Georgia Southern plated six runs in the top of the first inning against Appalachian State starter Kaylie Northrop. Jess Mazur singled home Faith Shirley to start the scoring, then Janai Conklin drilled a two-run home run. Courtney Ball and pinch hitter Sam Vinson followed with RBI singles in the inning.
App State scored twice in the second, then took the lead with a five-run third inning, capped by a two-run double from Emma Jones that made the score 7-6 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Mazur tied the game at 7-all with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, but App State moved back in front in the bottom of the fifth via an unearned run.
The Eagles went in front for good in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Mazur and Conklin. Aniston Johnson then provided a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run, her first of the year.
Rylee Waldrep (5-6) then worked a scoreless seventh to close out the victory. Waldrep went 4 1/3 innings in relief to collect the win, giving up four hits and one unearned run, walking one while striking out two. Delani Buckner (8-5) took the loss for the Mountaineers in relief, giving up six hits and four runs in two innings.
Conklin and Mazur each went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including home runs, to lead the Eagles offensively on the day.
