The program makes its first NCAA Championship appearance.
STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern women's golf team will be playing at the Tallahassee Regional for the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, it was announced on The Golf Channel Wednesday afternoon.
The Regional is scheduled for May 9-11 at Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida, where the Eagles will compete against 11 other teams and six individuals.
The Tallahassee Regional is one of six in the country. The top four teams and the top two individuals not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, which will be played May 20-25 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Playing in the Tallahassee Regional field along with Georgia Southern are South Carolina, UCLA, Florida State, Ole Miss, Illinois, Mississippi State, Miami, Denver, North Florida, College of Charleston and Quinnipiac.
"We're excited that it's a close course," said Georgia Southern coach Mimi Burke. "It will be good on the bodies and easy to get down there, so I think that's definitely to our advantage. We played a regional there when I was at UGA, so I know the course pretty well. We've seen a lot of the teams in our regional throughout the course of the season, so we're excited to compete against them again."
Champions of the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia Southern earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The Eagles topped defending Sun Belt champion Coastal Carolina by four strokes to win the team title in Burke's first season at the helm.
Freshman Sarunchana Rattanasin earned medalist honors, senior Mia Kness tied for second and sophomore Abby Newton tied for 11th. It's the first NCAA bid in program's history, which played its first season in 2015-16.
"We've had a really good mindset going into our last couple two tournaments," said senior Madison Heideman. "We're just going to keep that mindset going into this one. We're going to have that birdie mentality and close that chapter we just had at Sun Belts and open up a new chapter."
