Georgia Southern will compete for the Sun Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional when the Eagles travel to El Dorado, Arkansas, for the Sun Belt Championship, which starts Sunday, April 24, at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
The Sun Belt champion will be determined by match play for the sixth straight championship. The teams play 18 holes Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and the top-4 teams advance to match play Wednesday. The top seed will take on the fourth seed, and No. 2 will meet No. 3 in a morning session with the winners squaring off in the afternoon. All three rounds of stroke play, along with Wednesday's semifinal and championship matches, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
The event will be held at Mystic Creek Golf Cub for the second consecutive season. Georgia Southern won the tournament last season and in 2015 (stroke play only) and has advanced to match play in each of the last four championships. The Eagles (46) are one of five Sun Belt teams ranked in the top-100, according to the most recent Golfstat rankings, joining Arkansas State (91), Little Rock (44), ULM (98) and South Alabama (86).
The Eagles are coming off a fourth-place finish in their last event, The Stitch Intercollegiate, and have finished in the top-5 in five of their last six tournaments, dating back to the fall, including two team wins. Four Eagles finished in the top-25 at The Stitich - Ben Carr placed seventh, and Brantley Baker tied for 17th. Wilson Andress tied for 19th, Mason Williams tied for 24th, and Hogan Ingram tied for 29th.
Carr has placed in the top-8 in eight of the nine events he has played in this season, including four top-5s and a victory at the Bank of Tennessee Collegiate. Williams has four top 10s in six events to his credit with a win in the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate. Carr is playing in his third Sun Belt Championship and earned medalist honors last season, while Williams, who tied for 34th last season, is playing in his second. Carr went 2-0, and Williams was 1-0-1 in match play at the Sun Belt Championship last season.
Georgia Southern has used the same lineup in all five events this spring, and that will continue this week. Carr makes his 39th career start in the lineup, Williams makes his 30th and Wilson Andress will make his 23rd appearance in the lineup. Hogan Ingram makes his 10th start, and Baker will be in the lineup for the seventh time.
