Eagles finish the 2022 season with a 12-11 mark, the fifth straight winning season for women's tennis
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - No. 10-seed Louisiana won four of six singles matches to eliminate No. 7 seed Georgia Southern, 4-3, in the first round of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Thursday afternoon in Peachtree City, Ga.
Louisiana advances to face No. 2 seed Georgia State in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2 p.m. Georgia Southern ends its season at 12-11, its fifth straight winning season under Head Coach Sean McCaffrey.
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point as Sophie Wagemaker and Hannah Daniel notched a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, then Elizabeth Goines and Sonja Keranen came back from a 5-2 deficit to win, 7-6 (3), at No. 1 doubles.
Each team won three first sets once singles play began. First-team All-Conference singles honoree Silvia Martinez Jimenez earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Catarina Zheng at No. 1 singles for the Eagles to push the lead to 2-0. Georgia Southern also got a straight-set win from Sophie Wagemaker at No. 4 singles over Momoko Yoshimura, 6-4, 6-1.
Louisiana won in straight sets at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to tie the match at 3-all. The deciding match came down to No. 5 singles, where Angel Santiago overcame a first-set loss to defeat Elizabeth Goines, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, to clinch the victory for the Ragin' Cajuns.
