Box Score BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State softball collected a 7-1 Sun Belt victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Saturday, earning the series win over the Eagles.
The Mountaineers moved to 19-13 overall and 7-4 in the league with the win, while Georgia Southern falls to 8-20 overall and 3-8 in the league. The series concludes on Sunday with game three at Noon.
App State pushed across an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a one-run lead, then used a three-run home run from Kayt Houston in a four-run fifth inning to build a 4-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two-run blast from Houston. Georgia Southern loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and Shelby Barfield's infield single scored a run for the Eagles, but a ground out then ended the game.
Delani Buckner earned the complete-game win for the Mountaineers, giving up two hits and one unearned run, walking one and striking out seven to improve to 8-4 on the year. Rylee Waldrep (4-6) took the loss for the Eagles in the circle, giving up four hits and four runs - three earned - in 4 1/3 innings of work, walking one while striking out four.
