UTA Completes Series Sweep Of GS Softball On Saturday

Eagles return to action on Wednesday, hosting North Florida in a doubleheader

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington took two from Georgia Southern softball on Saturday, completing a three-game Sun Belt series sweep of the Eagles.

The Mavs won game one, 9-5, while taking game two, 6-0, in six innings. With the wins, UTA improves to 20-17 overall and 10-8 in the Sun Belt, while Georgia Southern falls to 9-24 overall and 4-11 in the league.

GAME ONE: UT Arlington 9, Georgia Southern 5

The Mavs broke open a one-run game with a five-run fifth inning to win game one of the doubleheader from the Eagles.

UTA scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings off of Georgia Southern starter Kyleigh Richardson (1-6). But the Eagles cut the lead to one in the top of the fifth on junior Sam Vinson's first home run as an Eagle, a three-run shot to left to make the score 4-3.

The Mavs took advantage of an early error in the bottom half to push across five runs, keyed bya. bases-loaded two-run single by Sophie Wideman.

Georgia Southern battled back in the sixth with a pair of runs on an RBI single by Ashlynn Gunter and an RBI groundout by Jess Mazur, but that would close out the scoring for the Eagles on the day.

Richardson gave up three hits and four runs in one-plus inning of work, walking three, to take the loss in the circle. Morgan Max (2-0) notched the win for the Mavs, giving up three hits and no runs in four innings of work, walking five while striking out four.

GAME TWO: UT Arlington 6, Georgia Southern 0 (6 innings)

Jessica Adams limited the Eagles to three hits in six innings in the circle, and the Mavs made a pair of first-inning runs hold up in the shutout victory in game two of the doubleheader.

A sacrifice fly and a wild pitch led to the two first-inning runs for the Mavs. UTA added a run in the third, then got back-to-back home runs leading off the fifth in a three-run frame.

The game ended after the Eagles batted in the top of the sixth inning due to a drop dead travel time for Georgia Southern to return home to Statesboro.

Adams walked one and struck out one in improving to 12-11 on the year with the win. Rylee Waldrep (5-8) took the loss for the Eagles in the circle, giving up six hits and six runs - four earned - while walking four and striking out three.
