STATESBORO - Troy softball plated three runs late to edge host Georgia Southern, 3-1, and take the Sun Belt series from the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Trojans moved to 20-9 overall and 6-3 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while Georgia Southern falls to 8-17 overall and 3-6 in the league with the loss. The Eagles will be next in action on Wednesday, visiting No. 17 Georgia for a 6 pm contest in Athens.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the contest in the bottom of the fourth on
Janai Conklin's fourth home run of the season.
Troy answered in the top of the fifth inning with a Jade Sinness solo home run and an Anslee Finch RBI double to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
A solo home run by Kelly Horne in the top of the seventh made it 3-1. The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the seventh to bring the winning run to the plate as
Ashlynn Gunter and
Madi Banks each singled, but with one out,
Ashleigh Duty lined out to shallow left field, and Troy doubled up pinch runner
Chandler Caldwell at second for the game-ending double play.
Leanna Johnson (13-4) notched the win in the circle for the Trojans, hurling seven innings of five-hit, one-run ball, walking two and striking out eight.
Rylee Waldrep (4-4) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up three hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings of work, walking five and striking out four.
