Eagles Shut Down Mountaineers' Comeback Bid

BOONE, N.C. – The Georgia Southern baseball team defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Friday at Smith Stadium, 7-6 in the opening game of a three-game conference series.

App State wasted no time getting on the board, as they loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first and took an early 3-0 lead.

The Eagles scored one run in the top of the third inning when a Christian Avant sacrifice fly to right-center field scored Parker Biederer, cutting the lead to 3-1. A Noah Searcy RBI single bounced off the pitcher to get away from the infielders and scored Jason Swan to cut App State's lead to one.

Jarrett Brown tied the game up in the top of the fourth inning with a solo blast to left-center field, knotting up the score at three all. It was Brown's third home run of his career.

The Eagles took their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the fifth inning as Avant hit a solo home run to left-center field to put the Eagles over the Mountaineers 4-3.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Eagles would add on to their lead as Swan hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line, which scored Brown from third base and gave the Eagles a 5-3 lead.

App State would score one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Eagles' lead to 5-4, but the Eagles responded in the top of the seventh as Brown brought home Noah Ledford and Sam Blancato on a two-RBI triple to right center, giving the Eagles a three-run cushion at 7-4.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning as App loaded the bases with no outs. Thomas Higgins fought back to strike out the next batter, and Jay Thompson came in with the bases loaded and one out. The Mountaineers would score two runs and had runners on first and second with two outs, but the final pitch was a pop fly to Brown to slam the door on the Mountaineers and earn Thompson his fourth save of the season.
