Eagles finish their weekend of play in Jacksonville by taking on North Florida on Sunday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern dropped a 7-0 women's tennis decision to No. 38 FIU on Saturday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Courts, on the campus of North Florida.
The Eagles fall to 3-3 on the season with the loss, while FIU improves to 4-2 with the win. Georgia Southern wraps up its weekend of action in Jacksonville by taking on host North Florida on Sunday at 10 a.m. Georgia Southern's men will then face North Florida at 1 p.m.
FIU nabbed the doubles point, despite the Eagles picking up a win at No. 2 doubles as Sonja Keranen and Elizabeth Goines defeated Basak Akbas and Kritina Miletic, 6-4.
The Panthers then won the first set in all six singles matches. Two Eagles pushed their matches to three sets - Nadja Meier at No. 1 singles and Dana Heimen at No. 2 singles - but FIU earned the sweep.
"I think we put up a good fight today," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "I know the score of 7-0 does not necessarily indicate it, but I believe we played really well against an extremely good team. We came out strong in doubles, especially Liz and Sonja, and ultimately fell just a bit short. And overall we played some very spirited singles, while both Nadi and Dana pushed their matches to three sets. We look to continue working on getting better as we take on yet another very strong program in UNF tomorrow."
