NEW ORLEANS - Georgia Southern freshman
Britton Williams was honored by the Sun Belt Conference Monday afternoon, earning Special Teams Player of the week accolades. It's the first time an Eagle player has been honored this season.
Offensive Player of the Week - Corey Rucker, Arkansas State
Second-year freshman Corey Rucker hauled in 9 receptions for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Arkansas State to a 40-21 victory over Central Arkansas in its season opener. All three touchdowns, which tied the most in the nation this season and were only one shy tying his own school record, came in the second half to help the Red Wolves overcome a 7-6 halftime deficit. Going back to A-State's last regular-season game of 2020, Rucker has now posted 448 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns over his last two games played.
Defensive Player of the Week - Zion Williams, Troy
Zion Williams intercepted two passes and returned one 19 yards for a touchdown in Troy's blowout of Southern. Zion's effort led a Troy defense that limited the Jaguars to just 189 yards of total offense and a single field goal. Troy has now held five of its last seven opponents to 20 points or less.
Special Teams Player of the Week - Britton Williams, Georgia Southern
Playing in his first college game,
Britton Williams tallied a team-high 12 points as the Eagles downed Gardner-Webb in non-conference action. The true freshman drilled his first college kick, a 49-yard field goal, and then converted from 25 and 23 yards. He also made all three PATs and had two touchbacks on seven kickoffs. He even added a tackle on kickoff coverage for good measure. The 49-yard field goal was the longest first made field goal for a kicker in program history.
Georgia Southern (1-0) plays at FAU (0-1) this Saturday in Boca Raton.
