JACKSONVILLE, ALA. - Jacksonville State tallied the match's lone goal in the 51st minute to pick up a 1-0 collegiate women's soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Complex.
The Gamecocks improved to 4-2 on the season with the win, while Georgia Southern saw its three match win streak come to a close, falling to 3-2-1 on the season. The Eagles return to action on Friday, September 10, hosting Stetson at 4 p.m. at Eagle Field.
Jacksonville State held a 7-3 edge in shots in a scoreless first half. Georgia Southern had plenty of opportunities, but the Eagles were whistled for offsides six times before the break.
The Eagles had two excellent chances coming out of halftime as a low driving shot from Elis Nemtsov in the 49th minute and a shot by Maddie Klintworth off of a corner kick in the 50th minute both forced saves from Jacksonville State goalkeeper Morgan Lerch.
The Gamecocks collected the match-winner in the 51st minute as Cynthia Bagozzi drove down the right side and lifted a cross to the far post, where Reilly Kucko was able to touch the ball past Eagles goalkeeper Michaela English for the tally, her first goal of the season.
The Eagles had a free kick and a corner kick opportunity in the final minute and a half to find the equalizer but a header was cleared off the line and a follow up shot hit the crossbar, securing the victory for Jacksonville State.
"We were flat today, and took our foot off the gas," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "We were inconsistent in training this past week and it caught up with us today. I blame myself for easing up in training and not continuing to train at game speed. Credit to Jacksonville State as they showed up and outplayed us today, even after having played Friday night."
Jacksonville State held a 17-6 edge in shots in the match. Michaela English made eight saves in net for Georgia Southern, while Lerch made four saves for the Gamecocks. Georgia Southern enjoyed a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and the Eagles were whistled for three fouls and eight offsides, while Jacksonville State was whistled for five fouls and offsides once.
