Eagles Drop Double Overtime Battle Tuesday

STATESBORO, Ga. – Nelson Pereira cleaned up a Ajmeer Spengler rebound in the 104th minute to lift the Stetson Hatters over the Eagles 1-0 on Tuesday at Eagle Field. The Hatters improve to 3-4-2 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 4-5-0.

The back-and-forth affair was chippy from the start, as four cards were shown in the first half. The Eagles had quality chances in the first half, including a penalty kick in the 33rd minute. Mauro Gutierrez-Solis was able to draw a penalty kick, which Adam Davie would attempt. Davie's shot to the bottom left side of the net was saved and the match remained scoreless through halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles would go on to double their shot total, producing another seven shots in the second half. Gutierrez-Solis had a chance with less than 20 seconds to play in regulation, but Jacob Gruber smothered the shot and ended regulation scoreless.

In the first overtime, Georgia Southern controlled the possession and took the only two shots. Two minutes into the second overtime, the Eagles were able to set up a corner and press the chance. Stetson was able to counter on a two on one breakaway, as Ajmeer Spengler had his shot saved by Blaengsson, before the rebound was secured in put into the back of the net by Nelson Pereira.

QUOTING COACH MURPHY
"We did not earn the breaks you need to get to win a tight match like that. Additionally, we showed our youth and could not put away the numerous chances we created. Stetson came in and played a smart game and, in the end, deserves the result. We have week to prepare for conference play and we will not waste a minute of it."
