STATESBORO - Spring practice is in the books and the Eagles now turn their attention to off-season workouts before reporting in early August for preseason camp. GSEagles.com caught up with each position coach to get a breakdown of their respective depth chart as well as their thoughts on their position group. Up ninth are the running backs with Coach Favian Upshaw.
What were your overall thoughts on your group this spring?
I thought we had a good spring and I thought everyone did a really good job. They all were given new roles in our offense and I think they did good of handling the changes we threw at them. They handled the new expectations and are doing their part to help make this team better. Logan Wright was productive and dependable all spring. He's a guy you can throw in there with limited reps and he gets it the first time through. Gerald Green is very consistent, as well. He's a guy who does exactly what you tell him to do and he's going to do it at a high level. Amare Jones is a different kind of football player. You can put him anywhere and let him to do anything. We just have to get him the ball and let him take it from there.
What or who pleasantly surprised you this spring?
As a group, it was how hard they worked. They already had a good foundation from Coach Foster, so I was stepping into a good situation. I've never had the chance to work with running backs, but they all worked really hard and that was nice. Throughout all 15 practices, I don't think we had a bad day as a group. Individually, I'd like mention AJ Brown. He's a walk-on who was a pleasant surprise. He made a nice impact for us.
What needs to priority number on the first day of camp this August?
We have to take it up a level. Where we finished off was good, but we still have a long ways to go. As a group, we want to be great so we can't be satisfied with what we did in the spring. We have to take it up a notch.
What young player stepped up this spring?
I'd say Jalen White. He has the most potential out of everyone in that room. He's really a mix of everyone: he's built like JD, runs with power like Logan and is fast like G-Green. He's going to be special. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do. He's a dude.
Who are the leaders of your group?
J.D. King, without a doubt. He's the leader of that group and he does it the right way. He doesn't give you any problems on the field or off the field. He does what you ask him to do and he also brings ideas to the board. He's just a dependable guy. Now, I don't need Coach King anymore. I need to get him on the field and we're excited for that.
