Post-Spring Breakdown: The Inside Linebackers

Coach Cunningham takes a look at his position and gives an updated depth chart

STATESBORO - Spring practice is in the books and the Eagles now turn their attention to off-season workouts before reporting in early August for preseason camp. GSEagles.com caught up with each position coach to get a breakdown of their respective depth chart as well as their thoughts on their position group. Up first are the inside linebackers with Coach Travis Cunningham.

What were your overall thoughts on your group this spring?
I thought we made some very good improvements this spring. Obviously, we have some really big shoes to fill and I think we made solid strides in figuring out where everybody fits in. I think we had some guys put forth some great efforts at both positions and I'm looking forward to see what they do in the fall.

What or who pleasantly surprised you this spring?
I've been asked that a few time and I think the guy who stood out to me was Marques Watson-Trent. On his own accord, he made a commitment to learn both positions and actually hop in and play both spot. The situation he got put into last year gave him a great opportunity for this year in terms of growth and development. He's pushing for a spot on the depth chart instead of practicing with the scout team and I'm excited for his future.

What needs to priority number on the first day of camp this August?
Technique. Fundamentals. Stance. Footwork. Those are the staples of our position. We have to have sustainable fundamentals. No matter what the schemes are week to week, we have to have our fundamentals sound.

What young player stepped up this spring?
No doubt it's Marques. He's the youngest guy in the room, but he made great strides this spring. He has the confidence now that he has the abilities if he's lined up properly. I think he can be a great asset to our team.

Who are the leaders of your group?
Hands down, Todd Bradley-Glenn. He has the experience and great leadership skills. He takes a personal vested interest in growing and developing the young guys. He's setting the standard in that room. He's teaching them how to study the playbook, study film and setting a professional standard on the field. He'll take time and help the guys on the sideline in between reps to make sure everyone knows the why and how.
