Post-Spring Breakdown: The Wide Receivers

Coach Sherman takes a look at his position and gives an updated depth chart

STATESBORO - Spring practice is in the books and the Eagles now turn their attention to off-season workouts before reporting in early August for preseason camp. GSEagles.com caught up with each position coach to get a breakdown of their respective depth chart as well as their thoughts on their position group. Up fourth are the wide receivers with Coach Derrick Sherman.

What were your overall thoughts on your group this spring?
I thought we really got better. The guys came to work every single day, whether it was on the field or in the meeting room. I know what I'm teaching is a little different than what they did before. I piled a lot on them in terms of volume, but they kept coming back every day and figured it out.

What or who pleasantly surprised you this spring?
I had high expectations for Khaleb Hood, but he continues to meet them. NaJee Thompson brings such athleticism to the field. He's able to do things that can make us special. And I thought Darius Lewis also had a really good spring. And the two new dudes are impressive and we'll be counting on them.

What needs to priority number on the first day of camp this August?
We have to get better. Have to get faster. We have to get quicker. We have to get stronger. We need to develop a better knowledge of what we're trying to do because it is a little bit different.

What young player stepped up this spring?
Derwin Burgess Jr. came in and worked his tail off. He showed up every day. Even when it wasn't clicking, he continued to work. It was very impressive for a guy who should still be in high school and I'm very excited about his future here.

Who are the leaders of your group?
We all lead each other, but the main two leaders are Dexter Carter Jr. since he's been around here. He doesn't say much, so when he does, people listen. And I thought NaJee Thompson took a big step forward in terms of a leadership role. He's pulling guys along and holding guys accountable.
