STATESBORO - For the first time since joining the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia Southern has swept the league's weekly softball honors. Sophomore
Aaliyah Garcia was named the league's Pitcher of the Week, while sophomore
Bailee Wilson earned Player of the Week honors, announced today by the league.
Garcia went 2-0 with an 0.00 ERA in her two starts against South Alabama, outdueling NFCA Freshman of the Year Watch List hurler Olivia Lackie in both contests. She gave up just two hits and one unearned run in five innings of Friday's 9-1 run-rule win over the Jaguars, then fired a three-hit shutout on Sunday, beating South Alabama by a 2-0 score for her first collegiate shutout. The Angleton, Texas, native gave up just five hits and two walks in her 12 innings of work, striking out 11.
Wilson, meanwhile, hit .600 with one home run and five RBI in the Eagles' Sun Belt sweep of the Jaguars. She went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 9-1 win, then had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth that gave Georgia Southern a 4-3 win over South Alabama on Saturday. The Clyo, Ga., upped her team-leading batting average to .382 with the weekend's productivity, an average that currently ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference.
This is the first time that Georgia Southern has earned both weekly honors from the Sun Belt Conference. It's the first time Georgia Southern has swept the weekly conference honors since April 2, 2012, when Sarah Purvis was the SoCon Pitcher of the Week and Mackenzie Williams was the SoCon Player of the Week. The honors are the first weekly honors for Garcia and Wilson, respectively.
Georgia Southern wraps up the 2021 regular season by visiting Georgia State for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series in Atlanta, beginning on Thursday, April 6 with a 5 p.m. contest against the Panthers.
